The Pedagogy of WISE

The WISE learning environment is built on research that explores (a) how to design science curriculum that helps students achieve a deep understanding of the dynamic nature of science, and (b) how computer technology can scaffold students as they perform such activities.

The WISE Project extends this research into a wide range of science domains, school settings, and curriculum activities. Based on our research, we have identified four goals for the design of such curriculum. Click on the options below to learn more about these goals and to see QuickTime video clips about each.

1. Making Science Accessible

Choose accessible topics and use models that students understand.

2. Making Thinking Visible

Make student thinking visible by using visualizations and representations.

3. Learning from Each Other

Help students learn from each other using collaborative tools, on-line discussions, and group projects.

4. Promoting Autonomy

Promote autonomy with reflection, critique, argument comparison and design activities.
